Indian business tycoons are scouting for TV assets. Last month, billionaire Gautam Adani sought to diversify his conglomerate from its shipping and coal-mining roots — to explore stakes in some local TV and print news outlets. And then we witnessed Mukesh Ambani’s Viacom18 bagging the digital rights of IPL broadcast. Amidst this TV drama, the TATAs, too, couldn’t help but jump right in.

Tata Group’s Direct-to-Home (DTH) arm, Tata Play, is leasing the entire capacity on board the newly launched GSAT-24 satellite. Built by the Indian Space Research Organisation for NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the satellite was successfully placed into geostationary orbit by the Ariane 5 rocket, operated by the French company Arianespace last week.

Notably, GSAT-24 is NSIL’s first “demand-driven” communication satellite mission post space sector reforms. Weighing 4180 kg, the satellite has a mission life of 15 years — leased for its entire lifetime to Tata Play.

And that’s not all.

The largest DTH service provider in India also announced its foray into home security solutions with the launch of Tata Play Secure and Tata Play Secure+ last week. The company has joined hands with Google to bring Google Nest security cameras to its subscribers.

The new initiative is in line with its endeavour to provide experiences beyond entertainment.

Power Play Even Without Power

You read that right.

Tata Play Secure+’s bundled service includes Google Nest Cam, which is battery-powered. This means that your Nest Cam has the ability to record even in the event of a power or Wi-Fi outage.

The company is also dedicated to providing all-around service. Nest Aware subscription is equipped with familiar face detection and 30 to 60-Day event video history. Installation and maintenance services, after-sales, and customer care will all be managed by Tata Play.

Too long? Here’s a one-liner: Tata leases NSIL’s GSAT-24 satellite for 15 years for its DTH arm, Tata Play; partners with Google to bring Google Nest security cameras for subscribers.
